Paço da Palmeira

Portugal

Built where the waters of the rivers Cávado and Homem come together, near Braga, Paço de Palmeira is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of Minho. Designed to be a residence for the leisure of Princes, Archbishops and of the illustrious aristocracy of Minho in the far north of Portugal, the palace combines simple lines with refined interiors, breathing in all the beauty of the surrounding landscape and the spirituality of places lost in time. José de Bragança, Archbishop of Braga (1741-1758) and a Royal Prince, bought the estate and ordered the palace built according to the standards of that time, the triumphant Baroque. Yet, Paço da Palmeira has distinct features from the other palaces built in Minho in those days, bearing greater resemblance to the palaces of Lisbon. Three princes of the Royal House of Braganza and four generations of the family Vilhena Coutinho successively owned the Palace, purchased in 1934 by a British nobleman and eleven years later by Mário Baptista Coelho. The latter began large restoration works to the building, a task completed by Artur Cupertino de Miranda when, in 1960, Banco Português do Atlântico received the property. In 2010, it was acquired by Carlos Dias and today it's part of the universe of Idealdrinks. A place of history and legend, Paço da Palmeira still holds today the bearing and elegance of the large manor houses of Minho and the privilege of unrivalled landscape, nature's gift.
